CO-OP FAQ

What is a Co-op?

A cooperative is a business that is owned and governed by its members. A co-op exists to meet the needs of its members with each member having one vote. Some similar examples in our community are the Olympia Food Co-op and Orca Books Co-op. Blue Heron will be jointly owned by its staff (worker-members) and its customers (consumer-members), with both groups represented on its Board of Directors. The Board will hire a General Manager, who will facilitate a democratic system of worker management.

What Do I Get If I Join?

Members will get a say in the business! Members elect and can serve on the board of directors. The Board oversees the co-op and sets policy and long-term plans. Members may also receive special benefits (discounts, special events, etc) as determined by the Board of Directors. You ultimately get the satisfaction of ensuring that Blue Heron will continue to provide good food and decent jobs to the South Sound community for generations to come.

Will I Have to Join to Shop Here?

No, everyone will still be able to enjoy the Heron’s incredible products. However, there may be discounts for membership and it will be a wonderful community to join.

How Much Does it Cost to Join?

The cost is $77.00 for one membership share. Should you ever decide to leave the co-op, you may ask for your membership to be refunded.

What happens to my $77?

Right now, the membership share will be used to cover the cost of converting the store. This will go towards buying the equipment, inventory, licensing and equity that owner Evan Price has nurtured for the last 35 years. After the conversion, membership fees will help provide operating capital to the co-op.

Can more than one person share a membership?

Only one individual can be assigned to a membership - this is partly for legal reasons and partly due to the cooperative principle of “one member one vote” - but other members of your household are welcome to take advantage of your member discount.

Is This a One-time Offer? Can I Think About It?

Of course you can think about it! Right now is a big push for members since the goal is to start 2023 as a Community Cooperative, but there is no pressure — you can join anytime — of course, right now is a special moment, so we hope people can choose to join as soon as possible.

How Do I Sign Up?

You can join by clicking here or at Blue Heron Bakery! (4419 Harrison Ave. NW #108, Olympia, WA 98502.)

Can I give more than $77?

Yes, we welcome “dough”nations! However, we request that any doughnations be provided by check or cash only to avoid service fees.
